So like I mentioned in the weekly update, I’ve been playing around with boundaries in WiiFlash so that you physically can’t look too far up/down/left/right while using headtracking. I managed to get this pretty much down through a bunch of trial and error and just tweaking some numbers. Just when I thought I had everything going good, I came back and reset everything up today only to find that everything was completely off from how it was yesterday. It turns out that everything is pretty picky on the location of the IR when it first starts up, and bases most of the calibration off of that. Basically if the WiiMote is a few inches off after you initially set it up, it messes everything up. Here are some screen shots:

This week I re-did the character designs since my team thought the other ones weren’t working so well. These are basic bipeds and one will occupy each face of the cube (pending our level design doesn’t change). I made 2 designs in Maya. The one on the left is a low poly, box design that should come into papervision nicely. I also made a higher poly smooth design, but after discussing with Jared, we decided that the box model will work the best. We came to this conclusion because 1) it will be easier on memory inside flash and 2) the user will not be able to see fine details of the model since each character will be fairly small.

Another point of interest is the grid program that Jared helped me make. This Flash file will help me lay out items with an overhead view. It has an embedded grid that only allows me to move objects 15px. Right now the only moveable objects are the white boxes. Each different colored block represents a different side of the cube. The reason I made this in flash is I want to create the level’s in flash with an overhead view so I can simply go through them with a character to see if the levels make sense.

I created an example of what the game cube will look like with 3D models on top.  We have to keep the poly count low for our 3D models to optimize the performance.  Eventually, the models will be textured (and modeled better).  I met with Deimler about the game design/mapping and we might decide to put the building models on the actual game maps on the sides of the cube, rather than all of them being on top.  Again, a very rough example.

This week, we worked on a lot of different things.  Our project encompasses a wide range of softwares, technologies, languages, and connections, so we need to accomplish many tasks at once.  At this point, everything is starting to come together, and the team is going to merge all of the work.  We almost have a server up and running for multiplayer…we are just going to have to figure out the best way to create a multiplayer environment.  The main designs for the menus are complete and will be transferred into Flash soon.  The level design and puzzles are still being mapped out (it is extremely difficult to manage 4 game stages at once).  Overall, we need to do a lot of work this week and make some concrete decisions.

You don’t quite run into this problem when running the file off an html browser. But if you were to run the Chat3.swf file from your desktop you are going to run into a small security issue.

Adobe has a built in security feature to prevent flash player from connecting to the internet.

Here is how to disable such a useful feature.

First you will be prompted by a security box. Just click “settings”

So i haven’t gotten AS3 to work quite yet. I still run into a few errors trying to get it to connect properly. I think it might be something as trivial as syntax error trying to switch from AS2 to AS3.

However, i have managed to get the server configured and running and have been able to connect to it using the AS2 chat client tutorial.

Here is a screencap of what the server looked like as i was testing it out on Thursday. The funny part is that the server booted out my idle client so the only way i could test to see if it would work was to log in and then get myself kicked for swearing. (it records all kicks and bans on the server client) That way when i got home i could check to see where i was logged in at.

Well, the process is over.  We will be integrating this design into Flash over the next week or so.
